The cruise companies certainly are not talking about it.

So, what am I talking about? It’s avian influenza caused by the circulating H5N1 subtype of the virus, aka High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), first reported in the wider Antarctic region as far back as 2022 and now likely widespread.

The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), instituted enhanced biosecurity protocols for the 2022/23 season in order to mitigate spread of the disease.

According to IAATO, avian influenza is naturally found in wild birds but are typically Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (LPAI) viruses. They cause no clinical signs of disease in wild birds. More concerning are viral subtypes (H5 and H7) which can become highly pathogenic in domestic birds (poultry) then escape into wild populations.

Returning staff have reported to ExpeditionCruising.com that landings in places like South Georgia - where there are vast breeding populations of seabirds - have been necessarily limited. It has also been reported that the stench of rotting carcasses is pronounced.

Scientists and researchers who would normally be conducting their annual projects have had their work cancelled.

“This is the first time I remember such reduced access to animal colonies since I started my Antarctic career in 1996,” says microbiologist Antonio Quesada del Corral, who manages the Spanish Antarctic research programme told nature.com, “Several projects were cancelled this year, because we wanted to reduce the risk of having an infection of people or being the vector that spreads sickness between different animal colonies. We had scheduled for next year more new projects on animal colonies — some of these are now likely not going to take place.”

Dr Marco Falchieri of the UK Animal and Plant Health Agency taking a sample from a dead seal in South Georgia, a British Overseas Territory © APHA

Of greater concern is the spread of the disease to sea mammals like seals. Tests conducted by scientist Dr Marco Falchieri attached to the UK’s Animal Plant Health Agency (APHA) showed positive for HPAI H5N1 in elephant seals, fur seals, brown skuas, kelp gulls and Antarctic terns.

Professor Ian Brown, APHA’s Director of Scientific Services, said in a UK Government media statement “Given Antarctica is such a unique and special biodiversity hotspot it is sad and concerning to see the disease spread to mammals in the region. If avian influenza continues to spread throughout the sub-Antarctic region this could significantly threaten the fragile ecosystem, and potentially put a number of very large populations of seabirds and sea mammals at risk.”

Adding this, the death of a polar bear from bird flu was confirmed in December by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, demonstrating this is not exclusively an Antarctic problem.

As the 2023/24 comes to a close, data is now being analysed and just how this ongoing event will impact Antarctic and Arctic tourism in the short- to medium- term is yet to be determined.

As part of a phased approach, starting with Antarctica and Galápagos expeditions in October 2024, they will be introducing an 'all-inclusive' offering as standard across the whole fleet from November 2024, covering all destinations.

Since rebranding to HX last December, this product evolution is one of many new initiatives that seek to combine their renowned exploring heritage with the modern-day guest experience. The 'all-inclusive' offering ranges from including expert-led daily expeditions, access to a whole series of science-led activities both on board and out in the wild, to alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and even professional photographs. These changes look to enhance the guest experience onboard, part of a larger project aimed at crafting the ultimate expedition cruise experience, but importantly simplify the product offering for trade.

Alex Delamere-White, HX Chief Commercial Officer, states, "Expedition cruising can be a complex product for agents to sell, given the unique destinations we visit and varying experiences by operator. We're confident that by including so many elements as standard in the price, we can simplify life onboard and enhance our trade-friendly focus."

"We want our guests to fully embrace being curious travellers when they're with us. By making things as easy as possible, they can focus on exploring remote parts of the world and learning from our expert team. We believe adventure should be all-inclusive, which is why our daily expeditions, talks and access to the science centre come at no extra cost, alongside delicious food and drink."

He adds, "In direct response to guest and partner feedback, this product evolution marks one of many initiatives to establish our new brand identity and enhance the guest experience. We have been the experts in expedition since 1896, now our team are focussed on strengthening our position as the global leaders in expedition cruising by providing pioneering experiences, unmatched itineraries and great value."

Damian Perry, Managing Director, Asia Pacific says, "We're continually evolving our product offering. This initiative will resonate with our Australian and New Zealand guests who are naturally curious about the destinations we visit, appreciate the authenticity of our experiences and align with our sustainability stance."

For guests booking a HX expedition, starting with Antarctica and Galápagos expeditions in October 2024, their regular grade cabin will now include:

· Daily expeditions and activities such as hikes, community visits, talks and more.

· Full board dining, including breakfast, lunch and dinner with house wine and beer.

· Wine, beer, spirits and cocktails available across the day and evening.

· All-day coffee, tea and soft drinks.

· Free Wi-Fi.

· Gratuities.

· HX's interactive science programme, Science Centre and activities both on and off the ships.

· Access to sauna, hot tubs, fitness room and more.

· Professional photos from the onboard photographer

· Opportunities to engage with and support local communities and environmental initiatives through Hurtigruten Foundation.

· Take home expedition gear and a reusable water bottle.

rodeimehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13114562768626186868noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2233448968069333748.post-58557200927157709312024-03-18T18:52:00.002+11:002024-03-18T18:52:43.397+11:00Journey with one of the world’s smallest cruise lines through the wild isles, lochs and canals of Scotland#expeditioncruising .

One of the world’s smallest cruise lines, Lord of the Glens, which operates an elegant, boutique vessel of the same name inspired by the Royal Yacht Britannia, offers lovers of ‘slow travel’ an intimate journey through the wild and far-flung isles, lochs, canals and highlands of Scotland. Departing from and returning to Reykjavik, guests will have diverse opportunities to enjoy the capital city’s varied attractions, including the neighboring Blue Lagoon, famous for its therapeutic geothermal waters. Ísafjörður is the first port of call, a bustling fishing town set in the heart of the dramatic Westfjords region. At this point, SH Vega sails north for an extensive foray into the wilds of East Greenland, from the remote town of Ittoqqortoormiit to the vast Scoresbysund fjord network and majestic Kong Oscar Fjord. Having returned south, the next port of call is Seyðisfjörður, East Iceland’s buzzing, cultural hub, surrounded by the rich, Skálanes nature reserve. The fishing village of Djupivogur then delivers quite a contrast, with its Viking origins and nearby Vatnajökull National Park, a wild expanse with Europe's largest ice cap, Vatnajökull Glacier, thundering glacial rivers and active volcanoes. Finally, the “Puffin Island” of Heimaey immerses guests in thrilling birdlife experiences before their return to Reykjavik.

SH Vega (supplied)

This unusual cultural expedition cruise, can be daisy-chained with SH Vega's next voyage, Greenland in Depth, to bring further Northern Lights opportunities and extensive expeditions into the secrets of Greenland, the world’s largest island.

Greenland in Depth – 30 August to 9 September 2024 –departs Reykjavik, Iceland, on a 10-night voyage of Greenland, immersing guests in its thrilling wild landscapes and inspiring cultures and traditions. The expeditions start immediately with the uninhabited coastal island of Skjoldungen and the dramatic Prins Christian Sund fjord. Here breathtaking vistas await, complete with opportunities for sighting bearded seals and finback, blue and minke whales. The colorful Inuit fishing and hunting village of Aappilattoq follows, bringing cultural insights which find a dramatic contrast the day after in the deserted mining town of Ivittut. Nuuk, Greenland’s capital city, is next, combining a modern perspective with a buzzing arts scene, old Colonial Harbor and traditional wooden houses alongside avant-garde architecture. Sisimiut, just north of the Arctic Circle, continues the cultural deep dive, having been inhabited for over 4,500 years by the Inuit, Dorset and then Thule people. Days eight and nine are dedicated to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Ilulissat Icefjord and Disko Bay, an Inuit home for millennia, before the cruise ends to explore Kangerlussuaq over two days. Once a WWII airbase at the head of the fjord, Kangerlussuaq is now a welcoming gateway to Inuit culture, with its dedicated museum and icy tundra, teeming with wildlife.

Not surprisingly, this exceptional cultural expedition cruise already has limited remaining availability, partly due to the spectacular opportunity it offers for daisy-chaining with Iceland, East Greenland and the Northern Lights which precedes it. You’ve been warned!

Canadian Northwest Passage and the Northern Lights – 9 to 25 September – is a 16-night cultural expedition cruise that sails from and returns to Kangerlussuaq in Greenland, making its way to and through much of the Northwest Passage, first calling at Sisimiut, the northernmost city in Greenland, Ilulissat and then Qeqertarsuaq, the largest town on Disko Island. Day six brings the magical mountain views of Pond Inlet on northern Baffin Island in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. A prime breeding ground for narwhals, it’s equally famous for traditional Inuit craft skills and the thousand-year-old qarmaq sod houses in nearby Qulalukat. Dundas Harbor, the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage on Devon Island, is next, followed by Croker Bay and Radstock Bay, closely associated with the exploration of Canada’s High Arctic undertaken while searching for the missing crew of British explorer Sir John Franklin’s fateful Northwest Passage Expedition in 1845-46. SH Vega takes guests closer to his story the following day on Beechey Island, where the expedition wintered. Port Leopold, a place of wild beauty, is the next port of call before crossing the Lancaster Sound to Elwin Bay, rich in wildlife from thick-billed murres, black guillemots, northern fulmars and black-legged kittiwakes to Beluga whales and ringed seals. The ship then calls at Fort Ross on Somerset Island, the now abandoned northernmost fur trading post of the Hudson’s Bay Company, where Sir James Clark Ross located the Magnetic North Pole in 1829. Passing through the Bellot Strait and cruising Peel Sound, this unforgettable cruise reaches Coningham Bay on Prince of Wales Island in the heart of the Northwest Passage. It then completes the return leg to Kangerlussuaq via the breathtaking Sam Ford Fjord and remote, beautiful Baffin Island community of Qikiqtarjuaq, renowned for the warmth and hospitality of its people, who welcome visitors and share their rich history, culture and traditions with pride.

Further enriching the experience, this voyage is one of Swan Hellenic’s Maris Culinary Discovery at Sea Series in partnership with JRE-Jeunes Restaurateurs, the gourmet organization for chefs under 40 who have already won international acclaim. Michelin star chef Alexandra Müller from Switzerland will be accompanying guests throughout the cruise, serving a different signature dish every night in the lead-up to a sumptuous Gala Dinner created to showcase her creativity and skills.

In addition, this cruise is also one of Swan Hellenic’s Explore Space at Sea Series in partnership with the SETI Institute. Renowned Astronomer Dr. Uma Gorti, an Expert in Star and Planet Formation, will be accompanying guests aboard and ashore throughout their cruise, giving two talks during the voyage: “Star and Planet Formation” and “Astrochemistry”.

The fourth of these special Northern Lights cruises is Canadian Arctic and Northern Lights – 25 September to 10 October 2024 – which sails from Kangerlussuaq on an epic 15-night voyage of discovery from the grandeur of Greenland’s glaciers, fjords and icebergs to the spectacular wilds and Inuit cultures of the northern Canadian coast. Initially exploring from Qeqertarsuaq, Ilulissat, Disko Bay and Sisimiut, SH Vega then sails south to Nuuk before crossing the Labrador Sea to Iqaluit in the Everett Mountains of Baffin Island. The northernmost city in Canada and capital of Nunavut territory, Iqaluit has been a fishing location of the Inuit and their predecessors, the Paleo-Eskimo (Dorset culture) and Thule for thousands of years. The acquaintance with Baffin Island continues along the coast and up to the uninhabited Lady Franklin Island, best known for its huge vertical cliffs of Archean rock, among the oldest rock formations on the planet, but also a haven for black guillemots, ptarmigan and gulls, with walruses and beluga whales nearby. Continuing south to the Torngat Mountains National Park in Newfoundland, staffed completely by Inuit, guests can hear first-hand their people’s tales of spirits and traditions in their ancestral homeland. The remote Arctic outpost of Hebron brings further insights into Inuit life and history on day 11, followed by a day at sea sailing on to L'anse Aux Meadows with its 1,000-year-old Viking settlement, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before this eye-opening cruise concludes in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Founded as a naval base in 1749, Halifax is now famed not only for its seafaring tradition but also its museum with artifacts rescued from the Titanic, as well as Fairview Lawn Cemetery, where many of the ship’s victims are buried.

As one of Swan Hellenic’s Explore Space at Sea Series in partnership with the SETI Institute, this cruise will also be privileged to host the institute’s CEO Bill Diamond, who will be accompanying guests throughout their cruise, both aboard and ashore. Bill will give two talks during the voyage: “The Search for Life Beyond Earth – How it Works, How it’s Going, and Why it Matters” and “Astrobiology, Field Expeditions and the Search for Life Beyond Earth”.

SH Vega is a 5-star Polar Code PC 5 expedition cruise ship with ice-strengthened hull, featuring elegant Scandi-design interiors, extensive outdoor spaces and dedicated expedition facilities. Accommodating 152 guests in 76 spacious suites and staterooms, the majority with large balconies, she features a swimming pool, state-of-the-art gym, spa, panoramic sauna and three dining venues – the Swan Restaurant, Club Lounge and Pool Bar & Grill.

Swan Hellenic Chief Commercial Officer Patrizia Iantorno comments: "We are very proud of these Arctic Northern Lights voyages with their exceptional onboard experiences. They not only offer rare access to the raw beauty, history and cultures of these remote, pristine regions, but also bring special opportunities to witness the Northern Lights from land and sea. We can’t wait to welcome guests aboard! "

Aboard either the 24-guest Ombak Putih or 12-guest Katharina traditional Indonesian sailing vessels, the 9-day trip sets sail from and returns to Flores Island between April and August. The perfect introduction to Indonesia, the compact yet robust itinerary gets active travelers up close and personal with Komodo dragons, whale sharks and volcanic islands, while also connecting them with the people living and working in local villages.

Featuring fewer full days at sea than other similar routes require, the new route allows for more time off the boat. That means more time in Komodo National Park, swimming along pristine coral reefs, exploring the site of a coral restoration teeming with fish and black-tip reef sharks, and experiencing volcanos, quiet coastal villages, bustling colorful markets, and more. The added flexibility of the itinerary and local knowledge of the ships’ experienced guides gets snorkelers in the water as much as possible to see the region’s iconic species like whale sharks, manta rays and sea turtles.

“This new route gives travelers the convenience of not being required to navigate hotels or traffic in Bali, or a long day at sea just to get to where the trip’s adventures truly begin,” said Todd Smith, AdventureSmith Explorations founder and president. “For those who have dreamed about exploring Indonesia’s rich islands in an active and immersive way, the options to do so are extensive and customizable.”

Along the new sailing route, travelers will have unique experiences including the opportunity to snorkel at the north end of Sangeang Volcano over underwater geothermal fissures that release gas bubbles into the water. They’ll also meet local heroes working to protect whale shark and coral populations, and have opportunities to support local businesses and villagers while traveling by traditional sailing ship.

Naturalist-led trips are also offered twice annually along this route that are suited for families with children ages 4+. Educational, immersive experiences on these themed trips give kids and adults with child-like curiosity fun, memorable ways to explore Indonesia together.

AdventureSmith also offers a standout 10-day Ring of Fire trip aboard Ombak Putih, noted for its access to more remote villages and its stop at a dugong conservation project. Launched in 2023, this trip accesses islands off-the-beaten-path east of Komodo National Park. Here, people are still living life on their own terms and making textiles and fishing using traditional methods. Extensive exploration of volcanoes, with a new one to wake up to each day, an opportunity to see historic Portuguese forts used in the spice trade, plus a free bar tab and hotel nights en-route make this trip a memorable getaway from start to finish.

Separately, another new offering for 2024 will feature a special 7-night sailing on the August 10, 2024 departure of the Aqua Blu Komodo National Park Cruise. Hosted by Chef Benjamin Cross, this trip aboard a dive-equipped 30-guest luxury yacht, will include a culinary adventure featuring his signature recipes inspired by East Indonesia’s spice routes. Roderick Eime traces the course of history.

Considered by many early explorers to be among the wildest rivers on the planet, the 4350km Mekong (Mother of Water) is the 12th longest river in the world and the seventh longest in Asia. Its daunting rapids and narrow, raging gorges thwarted the colonial French as much as the turbulent politics that festered along its banks.

For more than a century, the obstinate French overlords believed they could subdue this mighty waterway, but it was the Mekong who would have the last laugh. From 1866 to 1868, French naval commander, Captain Ernest Doudard de Lagrée and 25 men laboured through malarial swamps and tortuous, raging rapids in search of a navigable passage to Siam and China.

It would have been a heady spectacle to witness the party setting off from Saigon on their journey into the unknown. British historian and author, John Keay, described their departure thus:

"In two minuscule steam-driven gunboats, with an inordinate quantity of liquor, flour, guns and trade goods, plus all the trappings of a major scientific expedition, the Commission cast off from the Saigon waterfront and headed upriver into the great green unknown on June 5, 1866."

While the excitement may be the same, the conditions are vastly different for us as we are welcomed aboard the plush Jayavarman (aka Mekong Explorer) at the port of My Tho where a small fleet of Mekong river vessels are lined up in expectation of their arriving passengers.

The sweet aroma of polished timber briefly obscures the robust mélange of dockside odours as we peer around the common areas on the upper deck. Adjacent to the reception is the Henri Mouhot Lobby Lounge, named after the famous French naturalist who is credited with discovering Angkor Wat. In 1861, Mouhot succumbed to malaria at the tender age of 35 after making several perilous journeys into the jungles of Siam, Cambodia and Laos in search of new species.

Our vessel, I learn, is imperiously dubbed ‘Jayavarman’ after a succession of great Khmer rulers who likely never met the French. Launched in 2009, the ship's owners claim design inspiration from the great Gallic liner Normandie, yet inside it is bedecked in colonial-flavoured, dark wood decor, Vietnamese lacquer paintings and amply-upholstered sofas. Brass bedside clocks and faux vintage bathroom plumbing complete the illusion.

Jayavarman dining room (supplied)

Dining is in the Indochine single-sitting retro restaurant with dishes heavily influenced by local flavours and produce. Fish, pork, chicken and rice in countless fragrant variations appear each day, but neither are staunch Western tastes overlooked.

Much as Capitaine de Lagree and his intrepid Commission d'exploration du Mekong would have done a century and a half earlier, our shore excursions transport us by indigenous sampan all around the delta, visiting local villages while sampling their peculiar wares and products.

Busy trade in the Mekong Delta (RE)

Away from the incongruous concrete and cranes of My Tho, we’re soon among the more traditional delta port towns like Cai Be and Chau Doc where the Vietnamese frenzy continues, albeit on s smaller scale. The importance of the entire Mekong Delta for commerce, industry and food production is reinforced by our explorations ashore where we inspect everything from brick making, pottery, aquaculture and religious devotion. Few workaholic Vietnamese, it turns out, have much patience for prayer. The shrines and temples are mostly the work of the more devout Cham Muslims and Buddhist immigrants from Cambodia and Laos.

Across the border in Cambodia, the contrast is immediate. Life here is clearly more relaxed as we cruise serenely past the many stilt villages toward the capital, Phnom Penh. While the city is quickly taking on the character of so many burgeoning Asian metropolises, it had a lot of catching up to do after the unimaginable horrors of the Khmer Rouge period. There seems little sentiment for the long-departed French either as much of the former ‘Pearl of Asia’ is overwhelmed by glistening Chinese-funded high-rise towers.

The merciless Mekong ultimately brought the French to their knees and so too has it thwarted our final leg to Siem Reap. That said, it is quite common for bus transfers during the low water season on the great Tonle Sap, a luxury our French explorers were denied. We arrive at Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor Wat, and I take the obligatory tour to the great stairs where the leaders of the French Mekong Expedition assembled for their famous 1866 photograph.

While my story comes home intact, I pause to remember the brave and yes, foolhardy men, of the French Mekong expedition who did not return from their great adventure, among them its leader, Capitaine de Lagrée. The stoic commandant battled a crippling confluence of ailments throughout the journey, finally succumbing in China during the return to Saigon.

For now, the Mekong reigns supreme over the former French territories of Indochina but massive dam works upstream in Thailand and China now threaten the health of the Mother of Water. Most of these can only be accessed by smaller ships such as SH Diana, which also brings cruise guests the pleasure of mooring in the heart of Venice.

The first is the 10-night “Contrasts of Mediterranean Culture” aboard SH Diana. Departing Palermo for Venice on 20 August 2025, its imaginative itinerary follows almost the entire length of the Sicilian, Montenegrin and Croatian coasts. Exploring Lipari, Giardini Naxos and Taormina, Gallipoli, Monopoli, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Split, Hvar and Rovinj, guests will be immersed in the landscapes, cultures and histories of the many peoples who have settled these shores over the millennia.

The drily named “Exploring South America from Barbados to Brazil” on SH Vega follows an exceptional 19-night itinerary. Sailing from Bridgetown on 12 October 2025 in the Caribbean all the way down to Salvador de Bahia, this incomparable voyage takes in many of South America’s most famous but also undiscovered and inaccessible cultural and natural wonders. From Port of Spain, Georgetown, Paramaribo, Îles du Salut, Belém, the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Fortaleza and Recife. However, the highlight of this superlative cruise lies in an amazing four-day detour up the Amazon River to Macapa, Iquiqui and Gurupa in the heart of the jungle, returning through the otherworldly Breves Narrows, upriver from Belém in the Thousand Islands region.

For many, Swan Hellenic’s in-depth explorations of the Arctic and Antarctic will continue to be the major attraction. But others will be just as strongly drawn to its one-of-a-kind voyages in exotic regions between the poles, most of which can be daisy-chained to create unforgettable personalised odysseys.

Full details of all these expert-led 2025 cruises are already available on the Swan Hellenic Website.

Patrizia Iantorno, Chief Commercial Officer of Swan Hellenic, says: “We’re delighted with the itineraries our specialists have curated for 2025. They not only build on our pioneering 2023 and 2024 cultural expedition cruises, but also bring entirely new opportunities for curious minds to expand their horizons in 2025”.

More: Swan Hellenic

The most appealing aspect of the Norwegian cruise line is the unique destinations you can visit; cities and countries not yet spoiled by droves of tourists.

Read More at: https://travelnoire.com/explore-west-africa-on-hx-hurtigruten-expeditions-cruise

Emblematic of AdventureSmith Explorations' small ship expedition style of travel worldwide, a trip aboard Westward in Alaska and Baja California offers an invitation to slow down and experience the pulse and rhythms of tides, wildlife, nature and solitude. Travelers can expect intimate accommodations, professional guides, active off-vessel explorations, world-class cuisine and endless opportunities to make new memories, new friends, and be part of this unique vessel's expansive history.

"The best part about traveling aboard Westward is the ability to unplug and enjoy a slow cruise on a historic vessel without a fixed itinerary. Guests who have experienced Westward have repeatedly complimented the community feel she generates among her passengers," said Todd Smith, AdventureSmith Explorations founder. "Many have even said that being on the Westward was like going back in time to the 1930s 'as a guest on a good friend's yacht'."

Westward has a storied past, having originally been built in 1924 for Campbell Church, Sr. and used over the last century for a variety of purposes including Alaska tourism, hunting and fishing expeditions, and military service during World War II before being used to circumnavigate the globe in the 1970s. Still powered by her original 1923 Atlas-Imperial diesel engine that must be oiled every two hours, Westward has both maintained her charm and had its cabins and common spaces modernized over time. She still covers over 11,000 sea miles annually on some of the most intimate voyages offered to Baja California and Alaska, including Westward Voyages in the Sea of Cortez, Discover Glacier Bay, and Alaska's Western Passages that explore remote wilderness areas and offer up-close wildlife encounters and enriching cultural experiences.

The list of luminaries who have travelled on the Westward is impressive. From A. C. Gilbert (inventor of the Erector Set) to George Eastman (of Eastman Kodak), banker Paul Mellon, George Pabst (of Pabst Brewing Company), investor E.F. Hutton and his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post, Walt Disney, John Wayne, Bing Crosby, Phil Harris, Fibber McGee & Molly, and Amos & Andy, Westward has been a sought-after vessel for extraordinary travel experiences for many years.

"I am constantly aware that I have the privilege of standing where many famous people have stood and captaining a vessel with an incredible history. While on the wheel, I think of all those who have held those same spokes, looked at the same compass, out of the same pilothouse windows, and am totally humbled and awed," said Westward Owner and Captain Bill Bailey.

"Someday, Westward will have to retire to become the centerpiece of a well-run and well-funded maritime museum, and at that point, no one will be able to experience being aboard her while underway among the ice floes in Alaska, or wake up anchored in a desert cove in the Sea of Cortez," continued Bailey. "But that day is still far in the future.

Discover the flexibility, historic charm, intimate size, cozy ambiance and remarkable cuisine that has earned Westward a coveted spot on AdventureSmith's short-list of luxury Alaska cruises and a favorite for private Alaska charters.

For details about other small ship cruises that offer immersive nature experiences, travelers can lean on AdventureSmith's travel experts to recommend the best trips.
