On Water Expeditions sharpens ocean sustainability focus ahead of World Ocean Day

On Water Expeditions has reaffirmed its commitment to marine conservation and lower-impact small ship travel ahead of World Ocean Day on June 8.

The adventure cruise brand, part of the World Expeditions Travel Group, said it is strengthening efforts to reduce single-use plastics and food-related waste across its operations and supply chain, in line with the 2026 World Ocean Day theme, One Ocean, One Climate, One Future — Together.

The company operates small-group journeys on smaller vessels designed to access remote waterways with reduced environmental and social impact compared with large-scale cruising. It said partner selection is based partly on responsible tourism credentials, including environmental management, waste reduction and marine conservation practices.

World Expeditions Travel Group chief executive Sue Badyari said responsible marine tourism had an important role in protecting oceans and coastal communities.

“Sustainability certification and commitment to responsible tourism are important considerations when selecting our operating partners,” Badyari said. “We look closely at environmental management practices, waste and single-use plastic reduction initiatives, wildlife and marine conservation measures.”

In 2026, the group is surveying operators and accommodation providers to identify ways to cut plastic pollution through refill and reuse systems, improved food practices and waste reduction measures.

The program supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources.

Through the World Expeditions Foundation’s Regenerative Travel 2030 program, the group has also funded marine and coastal conservation projects, including Risso’s dolphin satellite tagging in Portugal, plastic waste initiatives in Bali river systems, and Ecuador’s Waves of Change ocean education program.

Badyari said smaller-scale expedition cruising could help increase environmental awareness among travellers while delivering benefits to remote communities.

“World Ocean Day is an important reminder that protecting oceans and waterways requires collective action from travellers, tourism operators and communities alike,” she said.
