Form Joint Partnership with Global Conservation Organisation
Form Joint Partnership with Global Conservation Organisation
Leading expedition travel companies—International Expeditions, Quark Expeditions® and Zegrahm Expeditions are pleased to announce a three-year joint collaboration with The Nature Conservancy. Building on the continuous dedication of each expedition travel company’s current efforts to protect the planet, this partnership presents an ideal alignment with the Conservancy’s mission to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends.
The Conservancy has grown to become the world’s largest and most respected international conservation organisation. Each expedition company is perfectly positioned to help the Conservancy raise awareness about preserving and restoring the natural world. Together, the organisations will be introducing more people to the wonders and value of nature by highlighting the Conservancy’s efforts in trip programming and marketing, and, when possible, the Conservancy’s scientists and staff will join relevant expeditions to continue the education in the field.
“We are very excited about this ecotourism partnership as we are working to protect nature at an unprecedented scale by focusing on the most pressing challenges facing people and nature and we can’t do it alone,” said Geof Rochester, Managing Director, The Nature Conservancy. “Together, we hope to inspire global action from worldwide travellers.”
A portion of each expedition guest’s trip cost* will be contributed to The Nature Conservancy over the next three years to help fund the Conservancy’s mission to conserve lands and waters on which all life depends. Participating expedition guests will also be eligible for a complimentary one-year membership with The Nature Conservancy. The affiliation will allow travellers to learn more about the Conservancy’s work in over 35 countries and encourage guests to take action to help protect nature.
“We are so proud to be commencing this joint partnership with a world-renowned conservation organisation,” states Van Perry, President of International Expeditions and Zegrahm Expeditions. “Each of our individual commitments to conservation has shown that in collaboration, we can be the collective voice to help The Nature Conservancy reach its goals and protect the world we are all passionate about exploring,” adds Andrew White, President of Quark Expeditions®.
A celebration to announce the partnership was held on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., and was attended by local press; the Conservancy’s Geof Rochester; and representatives from International Expeditions, Quark Expeditions® and Zegrahm Expeditions, including Portfolio Managing Director of TUI’s Adventure Travel Division, Hans Lagerweij. The event marked the official launch of the partnership.

Quark's Ocean Endeavour hits ice. Forces cancellation of sailing.
Ocean Endeavour sustained some damage above the water line to the aft port side of the vessel after encountering ice. There are no passenger or crew injuries, and there has been no damage to the environment. The Master of the vessel performed temporary repairs to ensure safe passage north to Ushuaia for arrival as scheduled tomorrow 17 November.
Due to this unexpected incident, the Ocean Endeavour will need to undergo repairs and a Maritime Authority inspection. Consequently, Quark has made the difficult decision to cancel the Nov. 17, 2015 departure.
Passengers booked on the sailing are being given a full refund, and the company will also cover flight costs not reimbursed by travel insurance, up to $500 per person. If passengers want to rebook for the current season, Quark will move them to other Antarctica sailings, including those that are longer, at no additional cost, or rebook for next year at the same price they paid this year.

"Quark Expedition has revealed plans to make an announcement “shortly” about a third Antarctic ship for the 2015-16 season." - TTG Digital, 1 August 2014
Following a report in TTG Digital, ExpeditionCruising.com understands that vessel will be the 1982-built, 137m former Soviet Arctic ferry, Kristina Katarina, renamed Ocean Endeavour. (Callsign: V7DV9, IMO number: 7625811)
Built as a passenger ferry to Dmitriy Shostakovich class in Szczecin, Poland, the 350-berth vessel has had several owners and names during her time and has operated in a variety of locations from the Baltic to the Mediterranean. She last changed hands in January 2014 and was refitted in 1988.
Like many of the world's expedition vessels, Ocean Endeavour is under the technical management of Florida-based firm, ISP (International Shipping Partners) through their charter arm, FleetPro.
One of the larger vessels in the polar expedition fleet, Ocean Endeavour is almost 13000 GRT with 6 passenger decks. According to ISP, “the ship has great amenities that include a nautical lounge, restaurant, sundeck, pool, Jacuzzi, and gift shop. Interiors are decorated in a contemporary style that invites both light and warmth into the many common spaces.”
ExpeditionCruising.com also understands that Adventure Canada will operate Ocean Endeavour in the northern summer. AC also co-charter Sea Adventurer which recently had her itineraries interrupted due to engine difficulties near Greenland.

Passenger from Quark's Sea Spirit dies in Zodiac accident
source: cruisecritic.com
| Sea Spirit |
"Quark Expeditions Inc. regrets to confirm that an accident has occurred during a Zodiac sightseeing excursion near the 14th of July Glacier, just outside of Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway," Quark said in a prepared statement. "A Zodiac carrying 12 passengers capsized, resulting in the fatality of one passenger and the injury of two other passengers. The injured passengers are not critical but are receiving medical care in Longyearbyen."
According to the Mirror's John Honeywell, the victim was an American woman in her 60's. She and the other 11 passengers fell into the water when their boat was struck by a wave.
| File image of passengers aboard Zodiac RIB (R Eime) |
"Quark Expeditions is doing everything possible to assist those involved and the local authorities during this difficult time," Quark said via its statement.
Sea Spirit is in the midst of a 10-night Spitsbergen Explorer sailing that left Longyearbyen on June 14.
(Editor's note: the water around the glacier is normally calm, so the question must be asked, "was the wave the result of calving ice from the glacier?" Will update this post as more information comes to hand. It should also be pointed out that all operators of Zodiac tenders instruct passengers on safety and lifejacket use, so it is reasonable to assume the passenger was wearing an approved life jacket. Zodiacs are sturdy and exceptionally stable vessels. The capsizing of a Zodiac is likely the result of an extreme event, possibly a rogue wave thrown up from a calving glacier which would not have been detectable by the driver until it began to break over his boat in the shallow water close to shore.)

Quark Expeditions Makes Plans For Its Latest Ships
Source: www.latecruisenews.com
by Kevin Griffin
In the past two years, Toronto-based TUI-owned Quark Expeditions has gone from using largely Russian-supplied tonnage to working more closely with International Shipping Partners of Miami as its main supplier of ships. Starting with the 4,200-ton 114-berth Sea Spirit, which was acquired from Cruise West just before that company’s bankruptcy, Quark has now taken on the 8,282-ton 189-berth Ocean Diamond, more recently acquired by ISP and for the time being chartered back to her previous owners, Compagnie du Ponant, for whom she operated as Le Diamant, for rthe summer of 2012.
Both Sea Spirit and Ocean Diamond will be used in Antarctica, together with a third ISP fleetmate, the 4,376-ton 122-berth Clipper Adventurer, all of which will sail from Quark’s usual base port of Ushuaia, Argentina.
In the meantime, two of Quark’s previous mainstays, the 110-berth Russian-owned 6,450-ton Akademik Ioffe and 6,344-ton Akademik Sergey Vavilov, are moving over one at a time to be operated by Vancouver-based independent One Ocean Expeditions. These ships are no longer favoured by Quark because they have a high proportion of accommodations with shared facilities.
In her first season with Quark, 2012-13, which stretches from November through March, the Ocean Diamond will perform two 19-night cruises to Antarctica, the Falklands and South Georgia, from $9,695* per person on November 3 or $12,795 on December 26, and eight departures to the Antarctic Peninsula, from $4,295 for 9 nights or $4,795 for 11 nights.
The Sea Spirit will undertake nine cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula, a cruise to Antarctica, the Falklands and South Georgia, at the same starting fares as Ocean Diamond, plus a 13-night departure to the Weddell Sea, from $11,995, and another 14-night cruise to the Peninsula that will cross of the Antarctic Circle, starting at $12,795, and a 15-night early season cruise on October 28 that will concentrate on South Georgia, from $10,295 per person.
The Clipper Adventurer, meanwhile, will perform two new expedition voyages for Quark. Known as the “Antarctic Express,” this will involve two charter aircraft flying the Drake Passage to King Edward Island, where passengers will join ship, 7 nights from $7,995 per person. At the beginning of these cruises, the option will be to sail south and fly north, from $9,995 for 9 nights, and at the end fly south and sail north, from $6,395 for 8 nights, for a total of four shorter cruises that will avoid a double crossing of the Drake Passage.
The Clipper Adventurer will kick off the season with a single Antarctica, Falklands and South Georgia voyage and will also perform nine Antarctic Peninsula voyages from Ushuaia, with fares similar to the Ocean Diamond and Sea Spirit.
Various ships will be chosen to perform different cruises in the Arctic thereafter. For this summer, these will be offered by the Akademik Sergey Vavilov, in her final Quark season, and the chartered Russian icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn, which will be offering two cruises from Murmansk, one to Franz Josef Land, 12 nights from $12,995 per person, and one to both Novaia Zemlia and Franz Josef Land, 14 nights from $15,995. Either the Sea Spirit or Ocean Diamond will be used in the Arctic and Spitsbergen in 2013.
And speaking of Russian icebreakers, efforts are apparently also being made to bring back the Kapitan Khlebnikov for further Antarctic departures in the future as well. While we await further news from Quark, it is quite clear that they are in the course of upgrading their fleet to a higher level of comfort than in past years, with ice-strengthened cruise ships replacing the chartered scientific research ships used in the past. Both the Sea Spirit and Ocean Diamond have a reputation for having worked for more upmarket operators in their own past careers.
