Alaska cruising has always been a favourite with Aussies and even in these tougher times, we're still heading to one of the world's last true wildernesses. Ros Freeman reports.

There could only be one answer to the question Caroline posed. "Would you like to join me on an Alaskan cruise?"  "Yes! Yes! Yes! I’d love to!"

Alaska is somewhere I’ve never been. My knowledge of it was scant. It’s cold. It’s an American state, though oddly detached from mainland USA. And there’s all sorts of fantastic wildlife including huskies who, despite the often sub-zero temperatures, always seem incredibly happy. I like nothing better than going to some place of which I know so little. Alaska fitted that perfectly.

Windstar's 51-Day Grand Mediterranean Cruise Aboard World’s Largest Sailing Ship

#expeditioncruising

1 Amazing Ship, 2 Magical Months, 5 Tall Masts, 11 Timeless Countries, 42 Intriguing Ports, 51 Incredible Days, 201 Attentive Crew, 153 Delicious Meals, 310 Adventurous Travellers

Guests on Windstar's 51-day Grand Mediterranean adventure will embark the 310-passenger MSY Wind Surf on 7 July 2019 in Europe's westernmost port of Lisbon, Portugal, prepared for an epic journey visiting the best ports in central Europe sailing across the culturally-rich Mediterranean, one of the world's most beautiful seas.

An equal match, the majestic Wind Surf is the world's largest sailing ship at 14,745 gross tonnes, 188 metres in length with 2497 square metres of crisp new sails soaring 67 metres skyward.

The ship will traverse the vast inland ocean during the cruise high-season on a comprehensive Mediterranean voyage. The cruise will call at popular ports and hidden harbours in Portugal, Spain, Gibraltar, Malta and Italy, sailing to the farther reaches of Croatia, Montenegro, Greece and Turkey, and then doubling back for more cultural immersion and travel delights in Monaco and France before landing in Barcelona on 27 August 2019; eight weeks of a once-in-a-lifetime discovery spanning nearly 9500 nautical miles.

"We believe that no one goes further to get our guests closer to the destinations where we sail. An incredible cruise like our 51-day Grand Mediterranean cruise on a sailing ship is exactly what people who love to travel live for," said Windstar President, John Delaney.

"Our beautiful Wind Surf is recognised around the world. Guests will be totally immersed in the region sailing on her for two months, with more than 40 ports of call to share authentic experiences and adventures with loved ones while laughing with locals. Not one day will be like the next, and that is the magic of cruising with Windstar — we're 180 degrees from ordinary, no matter where we sail. This Grand Mediterranean journey represents the best of the best chock-full of culture, cuisine and camaraderie."

Travellers aboard Wind Surf will be immersed in the romance of travel by sea and sail, cruising into major cosmopolitan cities such as Rome and Athens and gliding into impossibly quaint harbours to mirror the towering town spires of coastal gems like Sanary-sur-Mer, France and Rovinj, Croatia. Windstar's curated collection of shore excursions provides cruisers with hundreds of choices that span the spectrum from docent-led tours to Picasso's Museum in Málaga to ocean kayaking in Palma de Mallorca or pesto-making lessons in Portofino.

The ship's Captain will introduce present-day explorers to Windstar's unique Open Bridge, sharing nautical charts and marine weather reports, a novel concept, only for those on cruise ships of a certain size and stature. The ship's innovative Water Sports Platform gives new meaning to a view from the water; when anchored cruisers can dive into the Mediterranean to play with complimentary water toys, stand-up paddle boards and water skis.

The 51-day sailing is a marquis cruise; part of Windstar's popular Star Collectors Voyages that combine shorter sailings and includes a free Laundry Package for each stateroom and suite throughout the cruise - a real benefit on a long sailing. The two-month Grand Mediterranean cruise on Wind Surf encompasses six cruise itineraries varying from seven to 10 days in length that are linked together to create this blockbuster journey across the Mediterranean.

Kicking off with the 8-day Spanish Symphony from Lisbon to Barcelona, regional styles and influences of culture and flavours overlap as Andalusian tastes transform into Riviera glamour followed by Italian chic, serene Greece and colourful Turkey.

Key regions visited on the impressive tour of the Mediterranean include the French and Italian Rivieras, the islands of Spain, and the islands and coastal ports of the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. The 10 countries visited over the course of the northern summer's ultimate itinerary include Portugal, the British Territory of Gibraltar, France, Monaco, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Malta, Greece and Turkey. The mix of 42 ports is evenly distributed based on country size and offers a thoughtful balance of large port cities that have it all and small towns brimming with personality.

In 2019, Wind Surf will offer a total of 44 cruises visiting European ports from April through November including the epic Grand Mediterranean voyage, with all itineraries now open for reservations.

New tours and excursions in Asia from Windstar

#expeditioncruising .

Windstar Cruises has announced five new cruise dates running September to November 2018 in addition to already diverse offerings in Asia for 2017 and 2018 on 18 different itineraries with 25 different departure dates spanning seven to 34 days.

Visiting both well-known ports and hidden harbours across Southeast and East Asia options include a President's Cruise to the Philippines and Borneo, fresh land tours, recently added itineraries, and fascinating shore excursions showcasing the region in the line's '180 degrees from ordinary' style of cruising.

"Windstar's Asia Collection now offers larger-than-life adventures and exceptional experiences only possible on a small ship," said Windstar President, John Delaney.

"Reaching dozens of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and bringing guests in contact with some of Asia's less frequented landmarks, Windstar will also proudly sail straight into the heart of must-see Asian cities where larger ships typically dock on the outskirts. I'm really looking forward to hosting our guests and visiting some extraordinary locations on the President's Cruise, along with Star Legend Godmother and US travel professional, Gloria Bohan."

After two intriguing itineraries in Arabia, Windstar's Asia cruise season begins in December sailing through to the end of May 2018, when the ship navigates to Alaska for the summer season. The itinerary offerings are exceedingly diverse with port calls to small exotic harbours where cruise ships rarely call to epic visits at the icons of Asia including Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo (Yokohama), Singapore and Bangkok.

Windstar guests will embark upon a journey that allows them to enjoy a wider range of locales on land with four new pre and post cruise tours, including five longer itineraries via Windstar's new Star Collector Voyages. Aboard the sophisticated Star Legend, accommodating an intimate 212 guests, the casually elegant ship will provide access to distinctive cultural, historical, and culinary experiences, tantalising all the senses and making for an unforgettable holiday. The new itineraries and land tours cover architectural favourites and geological splendours including the Great Wall of China, Angkor Wat and Mount Fuji, as well as the chance to sail across the Pacific from Anchorage to Yokohama. New for 2018, passengers will delve into the magnificent and rustic Alaskan wilderness before soaking up all that Japan has to offer.

Windstar's President's Cruise sets sail on The Best of the Philippines & Borneo itinerary departing 6 January with Windstar President, John Delaney and Star Legend Godmother, Gloria Bohan. Many of Windstar's crew on this cruise are from the Philippines, so it will be a homecoming of sorts. It will be a wonderful way to explore the culture and country alongside those who love and know it best with Filipino crew to join passengers on shore excursions to visit their native landmarks and will share tips on their favourite activities and beloved locations in their homeland. The 14-day cruise will visit beautiful islands and beaches including Palawan and Boracay. The voyage features an overnight in Manila and a stop at the often-overlooked (and rarely visited by cruises) Hundred Islands National Park. A visit to Brunei takes guests inside one of the wealthiest countries on the planet, affording a look at some of the largest and most beautiful mosques in Asia.

Asia shore excursions are now 'live' on Windstar's website and able to be booked by guests. With so many new and noteworthy offerings from culinary adventures to must-see UNESCO World Heritage Sites, advance reservations are recommended particularly with the more popular and unique experiences like Ko Kut Treepod Dining. Offered by Windstar aboard the Icons of Southeast Asia cruise, this one-of-a-kind dining affair, inspired by the free-spirited nature of childhood, involves climbing up high to a leafy canopy where guests are comfortably seated in a bamboo pod. They are then gently hoisted high up onto tropical foliage of Ko Kut's ancient rainforest, taking in the shoreline views as a gourmet feast is delivered to them via the zip-line acrobatics of a personal waiter.

Uniting land and sea is the Angkor Wat Land Tour to/from Bangkok with four pre and post cruise options on Windstar. Over the course of three days on land, guests will have the chance to marvel at the impressive architecture of religious temples, predominantly Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here guests, who wish, will be driven in the early hours of the morning to witness a breathtaking sunrise over this Seventh Wonder of the World. A visit to Wat Atvea Pagoda, located in the Angkor Archaeological Park, is also included where there will be an opportunity to meet monks and receive a traditional Khmer Water Blessing from them.

Similarly, Windstar is offering the Angkor Wat Land Tour to/from Singapore with pre and post cruise options on 11 sail dates/itineraries. The Beijing and Xian Land Tour can be experienced as a pre or post cruise option on three Windstar's Asia cruises, with a 3-day land journey that begins in Beijing at the Temple of Heaven, providing an authentic look into local city life. From there, the 'Forbidden City' will present visitors with some of the best-preserved pieces of classical Chinese architecture before they head to Tiananmen Square, home to Chairman Mao's remains. No holiday in China is complete without sampling the flavoursome local cuisine, with guests to be taken to a famous Peking duck restaurant in Beijing. Guests will also experience the Great Wall before flying to Xian to encounter the Terracotta Warriors and visit the old city. The Kyoto/Osaka Land Tour is a 3-day option pre or post cruise on Windstar's Grand Japan. Highlights include Osaka Castle, the UNESCO Site of Nijo Castle and Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion and aptly named because the walls and eaves are covered in shimmering gold leaf.

There are five new sailings in the Asia Collection open for bookings 2018 and five new Star Collector Voyages in Asia, which combine some of Windstar's itineraries in the region for a more in-depth exploration. Free daily laundry is also included. These sailings range from 14-34 days with highlights including the following:

Singapore & Siam Holiday presents an exotic and stress-free alternative to celebrating the holidays over seven glorious days. Let the festivities begin with an overnight stay in Singapore before sailing to Malaysia to Penang's UNESCO World Heritage Site in Colonial George Town and then ascend on the Langkawi Gondola to get a bird's-eye-view of the rainforest wonders. Upon arrival in Ko Yao Noi, sea lovers can swim with the colourful butterfly fish in the aquamarine waters of this Thai island paradise or venture inland to scope out the quaint rural villages. An overnight stay in picturesque Phuket tops off this unparalleled holiday escape. What better way to ring in the New Year than with a Taste of Siam & Singapore New Year's Eve cruise. Guests will spend seven days sailing from Phuket (Patong Bay), Thailand to Singapore, stopping in Malaysia along the way. This exhilarating voyage commences in Phuket, famous for its pristine beaches. It continues onto Ko Phi Phi, made popular by the 2000 film The Beach, where party-goers can pop open their bubbly to celebrate the arrival of 2018. After a day at sea, create iconic memories in Ipoh, the fourth-largest city in Malaysia, where evidence of a British colonial past remains, and then take in the 360-degree views from the top of one of the world's highest towers in Kuala Lumpur. The trip concludes with a visit to the UNESCO city of Malacca and an overnight stay in bustling Singapore.

Aleutians & North Pacific Crossing will create an extraordinary passage between Seward, Alaska and Tokyo, Japan over the course of 16 days in 2018. A cruise that emphasises the less-frequented ports of call will retrace the route of Russian-America fur trade, island-hopping along the Aleutian Archipelago. Visitors can live out their wildest adventures as they sportfish in Kodiak – possibly spotting one of their famous bears – or kayak in the remote waters of Sand Point catching glimpses of bison. Fans of 'The Deadliest Catch' will get the chance to visit Dutch Harbor which was featured on this television show for being the only deep-water port in the Aleutians and main delivery port for king crab. This awe-inspiring excursion continues in Japan with Kushiro, home to Japan's largest marshland and endangered Japanese cranes, and Miyako, a city slowly recovering from the devastating 2011 tsunami and whose Jodogahama Beach has been nationally dubbed a 'Place of Scenic Beauty'.

While Windstar's 10-day Grand Japan itinerary was originally announced solely for early 2018, Windstar has now added two new Autumn sailings on this already wildly popular itinerary. Fall colours promise to be spectacular, along with fewer crowds during this less-visited but no less gorgeous time to explore Japan and South Korea.
For another take on Japan with a taste of Korean and Chinese culture, Pop Culture Kings of Asia offers 11 days of uncovering over 17 UNESCO sites, as well as the birthplace of J-Pop and Harajuku culture. Beginning in Tokyo and ending in Beijing, cruise dwellers can choose to immerse themselves in retail heaven in the largest underground mall in Seoul or meditate in the serenity of Kyoto, Japan's Bamboo Forest. Other highlights of the trip include Shimizu, home to Mount Fuji, Japan's highest mountain, the nearby 65-foot Shiraito Waterfall, and the unforgettable Tamano (Uno), a location though which few vessels are able to pass. Stopping in Hiroshima to sample the Okonomiyaki savoury pancakes cannot be overlooked before sailing over to South Korea where the dormant Hallasan Volcano and the world's longest lava tunnels are also a must-see.

Comprehensive China Exploration is an 11-day experience highlighting the best of China and Taiwan and featuring overnights in Shanghai, Taipei, and Hong Kong in 2018. This is a foodie's dream come true with opportunities to taste the umami of oyster pancakes found in the night markets of Taiwan, sample authentic dim sum in Hong Kong, and sip the local brewed beer in Qingdao. Senses will be tantalised in Shanghai, the 'Pearl of the Orient', from the maze of shops and vendors in Old Shanghai to the colourful tall buildings dotting the impressive skyline. In Zhoushan, the 'Venice of China' sightseers can explore the 36 bridges connecting the city or the nearby island of Putuoshan, home to 80 Buddhist monasteries and gardens

Windstar Cruises returns to Alaska

Award-winning boutique cruise line, Windstar Cruises has announced a return to Alaska sailings in its northern Spring/Summer 2018 ports of call also taking in British Columbia.

The news comes on the heels of Windstar's recent announcement of its return to Asia in 2017/18, with the 212-guest, all-suite Star Legend yacht sailing from Tokyo to Seward (Anchorage), Alaska over a 14-day trans-Pacific cruise, which also stops in Miyako, Hakodate, and Kushiro in Japan.

Windstar's Alaska beckons guests to slow down over leisurely journeys. With voyages starting at 11 days, there is ample time for scenic cruising in both Canada's and Alaska's famed inside passages – where guests can look for orcas, bears, and bald eagles from the comfort of their elegant ship.

Star Legend will sail Misty Fjords National Monument and Kenai Fjords National Park, experiences usually booked via a shore excursion because the 'big ships' do not go there.

Each Windstar Alaska itinerary includes sailing through Tracy Arm Fjord – so close that noise of the ice breaking and falling into the water during glacier calving will surprise. Enthusiastic park rangers, scientists, glaciologists, geologists, and other experts will be aboard each cruise to provide education, perspective, one-on-one discussions, and ample opportunities for individual discovery in America's 'last frontier'.

"We are so excited to be enhancing the Alaskan travel marketplace by introducing our brand of true small ship cruising to Alaska. Sailing closer to pristine deciduous shorelines, delving deeper into all-enveloping fjords, kayaking in icy straits right off the ship's Watersports Platform, and viewing an endless wilderness from sea level. We are bringing our guests right to the heart of what makes Alaska and the Great Pacific Northwest such an amazing destination and magical place to visit," said Windstar President, John Delaney.

"We are working hard now to arrange customised bucket list moments like the chance to hike atop the massive Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska's capitol of Juneau, zip-line over crystal-clear creeks in bear country, snap a classic whale tail picture on your mobile phone – during a romantic deck-side dinner, fly over majestic Glacier Bay in a private plane, uncover Sitka's rich Russian heritage, or check out Petroglyph Beach in Wrangell – a destination rarely visited by cruise ships. Windstar is thrilled to put its stamp on this classic cruise region and expects it will quickly become a Yacht Club Member favourite. We honestly can't wait!"

Highlights of Windstar's inaugural Alaska season with the 212-guest Star Legend yacht include:

Cruising Tracy Arm and Misty Fjords.
Optional up-close and personal kayaking and scenic cruising by Zodiac directly from the ship.
Full destination immersion with 7 to 8 Southeast Alaska and British Columbia ports each cruise.
Sailing right into Misty Fjords and Kenai Fjords, due to small size of ship.
Multiple glacier experiences on northbound/southbound sailings featuring Mendenhall Glacier, Tracy Arm, and Kenai Fjords.
Longer itineraries of 11 to 14 days allowing the yacht to move slower and get closer to shore exploring more off the usual charted course.
Naturalist/Expedition Leaders on all voyages who will customise the experience for guests along with speakers from Native American tribes.

Once in Alaska, the elegant Star Legend embarks on three new itineraries with eight sailing dates, departing May to August 2018, including a 14-day Seward (Anchorage) to Vancouver option; 12-day Vancouver round-trip itinerary, and 11 or 12 day Vancouver to Seward (Anchorage) voyages. Windstar also plans to offer pre and post cruise land excursions, allowing guests more time to explore Alaska's interior.

New Alaska Itineraries Sail Longer, Slower, Closer to Shore, and Deeper into Fjords

Wonders of Alaska & Canada – These 14-day voyages from Seward (Anchorage) to Vancouver are offered three times, allowing guests a full two weeks of jaw-dropping scenery and history. British Columbia's Prince Rupert, located on Kaien Island just north of the mouth of the Skeena River, is a highlight – a picturesque port rich in culture and heritage. Teeming with wildlife, guests can expect whale, eagle, salmon, and grizzly bear sightings, and also visit the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, with one of the densest remaining North American bear populations.

Alaskan Splendors – Multiple journeys between Vancouver and Seward (Anchorage) over 11 or 12 days offer a tour de force of top Alaskan destinations. From the wildlife and glaciers of the Inside Passage to the First Nations totems of Ketchikan; hiking in Haines or sampling its cultural offerings like the Alaska Indian Arts Center, where traditional craftsmen demonstrate their work; to the biggest zip-line in the United States in Icy Strait Point.

Islands & Inlets of the Inside Passage – Offering two 12-day sailings, this itinerary cruises roundtrip from Vancouver, passing under the famed Lions Gate Bridge twice, both en route to the rugged coastline and on the return. A hidden gem at the midway point of the Inside Passage sits Metlakatla, Alaska on verdant Annette Island. This locale is the only US settlement of the indigenous Tsimshian people, where guests can visit a traditional longhouse and experience the full regalia of Native American song and dance shows.

Windstar Alaska fares start from AUD7163 per person twin share based on Oceanview Suite Cat S for the 11-night Alaskan Splendors departing 31 May 2018.

Star Legend, one of the world's most luxurious small cruise ships, plays the casually elegant host to no more than 212 guests. The experience is like sailing on your own private yacht with nearly a 1:1 staff to guest ratio, boasting all-suite accommodations and beautifully appointed public spaces such as the elegant AmphorA and romantic Candles restaurants. The classy and comfortable Yacht Club lounge located on the top guest deck is sure to be the place for spotting whale spouts and wildlife on the shoreline, as cruisers relax with a Captain's Coffee and enjoy the 270-degree indoor/outdoor viewing opportunities.

Star Legend's 106 suites offer more room than many hotels, with stylish dĂ©cor, walk-in closets, marble bathrooms, L'Occitane® toiletries, and a tranquil seating area — all with a view. Alaska-bound travellers may choose from 106 suites, including 36 Balcony Suites with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that bring fresh air and sweeping scenery indoors; or select one of 64 Ocean View Suites with large picture windows; or splurge on a decadent Owner's or Classic Suite located just below the yacht's Open Bridge, with a stunning view from the private veranda. Yacht guests will enjoy 'destination authenticity' like only Windstar can deliver with regionally themed cuisine, libations, entertainment, speakers and activities, as well as personalised small group shore excursions, and always gracious and attentive service.

Windstar Star Breeze christened

#expeditioncruising

At a christening ceremony in Nice, Windstar Cruises introduced Star Breeze, its second new all-suite power yacht. Travel influencer, Wendy Perrin, served as the godmother at a celebration prior to the inaugural cruise through France, Monaco and Italy.

Wendy Perrin, TripAdvisor's first 'travel advocate' and the founder of WendyPerrin.com, broke a bottle of champagne over the bow in front of 250 guests, media, trade partners and representatives of Windstar parent company Xanterra Parks & Resorts.

Perrin was joined on stage by Windstar ceo Hans Birkholz, Capt. Krasimir Ivanov and Father Jean Marie.

'The driving force to Windstar’s success is our unwavering commitment of providing a personal, yacht-style vacation. Our ships are small, our ambience casually elegant, our service personal,' Birkholz said.

The 212-passenger yacht joins the fleet after an $8.5m, three-week renovation in Genoa. The former Seabourn ship received a stem to stern transformation, including overhauls of every public space, dining venues and suites.

After its inaugural voyage, Star Breeze will continue to cruise in the Mediterranean for the summer season. Following an ocean crossing in the fall, the ship will embark on Windstar’s newest Caribbean itinerary, 'Icons of the Dutch Caribbean,' before sailing in Panama and Costa Rica for the winter season.

In Bora Bora, Tahitian fire dancers brighten the night as guests celebrate a traditional Ahima'a feast at their private island celebration event.

Windstar Cruises’ Private Events Coming To All 2015 Voyages

#expeditioncruising

Windstar Cruises - Wind Star - Wind Spirit

Starting in 2015, all Windstar Cruises’ itineraries will feature a spectacular onshore private event, created exclusively for Windstar guests. These complimentary events are crafted to give guests an in-depth and authentic local experience that compliments their voyage. Private events include activities such as an after-hours tour and dinner under the stars in the magnificent Celsus Library of Ephesus or a private ballet performance in the famed Odessa National Opera and Ballet Theatre.

“We curated these Private Events with the local experience in mind. Our product managers toured the regions sampling cuisines, talking to locals, visiting the UNESCO sites to create the best experience possible,” said Hans Birkholz, Windstar Cruises’ chief executive officer. “Our guests gain an even deeper involvement into the local culture.”

Windstar debuted its first exclusive private event on its Dreams of Tahiti voyage in May. The event, included on all 2014 sailings through the South Pacific, features an evening of entertainment with music and a dazzling performance by local fire dancers on a secluded island or “motu.” The evening also includes a dinner of local Tahitian cuisine with tender suckling pig slowly steamed in a traditional ”ahima’a” earth oven.
