Pinault donates AUD$158 million to rebuild fire-ravaged Notre Dame Cathedral

#expeditioncruising .

Most of us watched the morning news with dismay, seeing a burning inferno of that iconic symbol of the City of Lights, Notre-Dame.

While the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral was still burning, President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron committed to immediate rebuilding and refurbishment, and implementation of an international fundraising campaign.

Within hours, Fran├žois-Henri Pinault, chairman of the Kering Group and Chairman of Artemis - the holding company that controls the assets of the Pinault family (which includes the luxury cruise company PONANT as well as brands Gucci, Yves St Laurent and Alexander McQueen) - pledged 100 million Euros towards the rebuild.

Pinault is the chairman and CEO of the Kering group, which owns such brands as Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen. He is also president chairman of Artemis, the holding company that controls the assets of the Pinault family.

Coming from family funds this is, to my mind, a most extraordinary gesture.

No matter how deep one’s pockets may be, a wonderfully generous gift and, for me, a humbling reflection of just who is behind Ponant.
