Atlas Ocean Voyages to launch expedition sailing yacht in 2028

Atlas Ocean Voyages has outlined plans for a new expedition vessel, Atlas Adventurer, scheduled to enter service in 2028, featuring hybrid propulsion and an all-suite accommodation design.

The ship is being developed as a sailing-assisted expedition yacht, combining conventional engines with a triple-masted sail system to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. It will also incorporate dual-fuel engines, battery-supported hybrid propulsion and ice-class capability for operations in polar regions.

Ongoing uncertainty surrounding the resumption of cruising in Australia and the projected status of Australian interstate and international borders has forced UK-based cruise line, Tradewind Voyages, to cancel its maiden 2022/23 summer season in Australia of the world’s newest and largest sailing ship, Golden Horizon.

If you’re used to bigger ships, note that there are no ‘inside cabins’ on this cruise. Cabins consist of twin-size berths and face the ocean through a window or porthole, depending on deck. Suites have one queen-size bed.

The expedition voyage includes a night in a hotel in gracious Buenos Aires, birthplace of the tango. There’s another night ashore in Cartagena, a Caribbean gem on South American shores. Here in 1741, Spanish Admiral Don Blas de Lezo, with only one eye, one leg and one hand, successfully defended the city against British attack.

Another night is spent in Ushuaia, a city so far south it’s nicknamed Fin del Mundo (the End of the World). You’ll stay two nights in a hotel in Peru’s El Valle Sagrado (the Sacred Valley of the Incas) and another night in the Inca capital of Cusco. Flights from Lima to Cusco and Cusco to Trujillo are included.

A leisurely five-week cruise on a boutique-size ship

A Mediterranean cruise lasting over five weeks on a boutique-size ship gives scope to visit brilliant places away from the tourist beat.

Cruise Traveller is offering a Mediterranean voyage overflowing with highlights, history, fine architecture, pretty Greek islands and beautiful bays – as well as famous cities like Venice, Istanbul, Nice and World Heritage-listed Dubrovnik.

The ‘Enchanting Mediterranean Grand Voyage’ starts in Marseilles on the French Riviera and ends in Athens after 37 memorable nights.

Another highlight is UNESCO-listed Alberobello in southern Italy, a town like no other with its characteristic Trulli houses dating from prehistoric times.

Then there’s Kotor. Not everyone has heard of this coastal town in Montenegro. It’s one of the best preserved and most delightful medieval towns in the Adriatic, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

At Split, a city on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, date palms line a seafront esplanade in front of the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s palace – a structure so well preserved that about 3000 people live within its walls today.
