Spring cruising begins in early April

UnCruise Adventures released its schedule of Alaska cruises for 2019 and opens the Alaska cruise season earlier with its first adventure cruise departing on April 6. Seven small ships sail 142 departures on 11 itineraries with a new Alaska's Glacier Country itinerary sailing roundtrip from Juneau.

From April through September, boutique yachts and expedition ships sail adventure cruises lasting one to two weeks from homeports of Seattle, WA; Ketchikan, Juneau, Petersburg and Sitka, Alaska. Ships carry 22 to 90 guests.

In spring 2019, UnCruise will feature 24 Alaska Awakening departures in April and May and will begin spring sailings the earliest in company history. Alaska Awakening highlights the benefits of spring and encourages visiting Southeast Alaska during the driest months of the year. On every Alaska Awakening departure, an Alaska Awakening Insider theme host will share their intimate knowledge of the land with guests.

UnCruise Adventures has launched its 2018 schedule of small ship cruises highlighted by a new itinerary on the Columbia and Snake Rivers, plus a fresh lineup of itineraries and an expanded selection of ships in Alaska, according to a company statement.

Of note, the 88-guest S.S. Legacy heads to Alaska from April through mid-August, then sails on the Columbia and Snake Rivers from August through November.

Cruise guides mauled by bear in Alaska

A brown bear mauled two expedition guides from Un-Cruise Adventures as they led a shore excursion on a trail in Alaska.

The guides were leading a group of 22 cruisers from Wilderness Explorer on a hike on Chichagof Island on Thursday afternoon. The group encountered a brown bear sow and cub about 2.5 miles up the trail when the attack happened, according to a news release from Un-Cruise. All 22 passengers are unharmed.

New Pure Panamá itinerary set to debut

Un-Cruise Adventures has released its full deployment schedule for 2017, highlighted by a new Pure Panamá cruise as well as updated Galápagos Islands and Columbia River wine itineraries.

Un-Cruise Adventures' fleet of boutique yachts and small ships carry 22-88 guests on adventure and river cruises from one week to 21 nights in Alaska, British Columbia, coastal Washington, Columbia and Snake Rivers, Mexico, Hawaii, the Galápagos Islands, Costa Rica and Panama. Adventure activities, tours, and presentations are included.

Panamá – New destination in 2017

Beginning in April 2017, the 62-guest Safari Voyager will sail 22 departures on the new Pure Panamá: Cultures, Coasts & Canal itinerary sailing roundtrip Panamá City, Panamá. Areas visited on the eight-night adventure cruise include Panamá City, Guna Yala, Chagres River, Panamá Canal, Pearl Islands Archipelago and the Darién Jungle. Rates begin at $3,795 per person, double occupancy.

A new 15-night Ultimate Costa Rica and Panamá itinerary combines the  Panama and Costa Rica cruises together on two departures departing April 22 and November 17, 2017. Rates begin at $7,745 per person, double occupancy and include a pre-cruise hotel night.

Galápagos Islands – Updated itinerary in 2017

From April to October 2017, the 48-guest La Pinta sails 10 departures on the Darwin's Islands and Colonial Quito itinerary roundtrip from Quito, Ecuador. This eight-night adventure begins with two nights in Quito and includes visits to seven islands with stops at the Charles Darwin Research Center and the geological marine site of Punta Vicente Roca on Isla Isabela. Rates begin at $8,295 per person, double occupancy.


Columbia and Snake Rivers – Updated wine itinerary in 2017

The 88-guest S.S. Legacy, a replica coastal steamer, offers 34 weeklong river cruise departures on two itineraries on the Columbia and Snake Rivers, roundtrip Portland, Oregon from April through November. In 2017, eight departures are offered on the updated Rivers of Wine itinerary that visits several wineries in Washington and Oregon. Wine experts join the ship for wine tastings and presentations on board and guests explore American viticultural areas such as Red Mountain and the Willamette and Columbia Valleys.

The Legacy of Discovery itinerary cruises through the scenic Columbia River Gorge to the rolling hills of the Palouse, east to Hells Canyon and back to the coastal town of Astoria, Oregon while transiting eight sets of locks and dams. Expert guides share extensive knowledge of the Lewis and Clark journey with onboard historians, presentations and visits to several historical sites. Rates begin at $3,395 per person, double occupancy.

Costa Rica & Panamá

From January through April 2017, the 62-guest Safari Voyager sails 16 weeklong adventure cruises on the Uncharted Isthmus! Sloths, Monkeys & Mangroves itinerary between San José, Costa Rica and Panamá City (or reverse). Jungle hikes, snorkel, kayak, paddle board and explore by skiff.  Visit Curú National Wildlife Refuge, Manuel Antonio National Park, Osa Conservation Area and Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica; Coiba National Park and Gulf of Panama Islands, Panama. A full Panama Canal transit is included in each voyage. Rates begin at $3,745 per person, double occupancy.

In November 2017, an updated eight-night Unveiled Wonders itinerary adds one night pre-cruise to the adventure offered on six departures through December 2017 and continues through April 2018. Rates begin at $4,195 per person, double occupancy. 

Southeast Alaska

From April to September, travelers may choose from eleven adventure cruise itineraries on 157 departures lasting one week or 12 days, several with visits to Glacier Bay National Park, from homeports of Seattle, WA; Ketchikan, Juneau and Sitka, Alaska.

New in 2017, the Inner Reaches Western Coves itinerary from Ketchikan to Juneau visits the Tlingit village of Kake for a half day to experience the Native Tlingit culture through dance, storytelling and totem carving presentations.

Itineraries may be combined to create adventures from two to three weeks long while remaining on the same vessel.  Six vessels—22-guest Safari Quest, 36-guest Safari Explorer, 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer, 74-guest Wilderness Explorer, 76-guest Wilderness Discoverer and 84-guest Safari Endeavour—sail adventure cruises in remote Alaskan wilderness with a focus on exploring wilderness and wildlife. With few or no port calls during the week, the emphasis is on exploring outside: hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, skiff excursions and whale watching are included. Pacific Northwest

From April to May and September to November, weeklong adventure cruises sailing roundtrip from Seattle explore the islands, temperate rainforests and hidden coves found in the secluded waterways of the Pacific Northwest. The 76-guest Wilderness Discoverer offers 14 departures on an Explore! Olympic Wilderness & San Juan Islands itinerary sailing in Washington's Puget Sound from south Hood Canal north through the Salish Sea and San Juan Islands with visits to Olympic National Park, Mt. Constitution and Sucia and Orcas Islands. The 22-guest Safari Quest sails 19 departures on a British Columbia's Yachters' Paradise itinerary exploring Victoria, Harmony Islands, Princess Louisa Inlet, Jervis Inlet, Gulf Islands, B.C.; and San Juan Island, WA. Rates begin at $3,695 aboard the Safari Quest and $2,095 aboard the Wilderness Discoverer. Rates are per person, double occupancy.


Mexico's Sea of Cortés

From January through March and November through December, the 84-guest Safari Endeavour operates 20 Baja's Bounty adventure cruises exploring the remote Sea of Cortés, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Seven-night adventures include either an opportunity to snorkel alongside whale sharks in Bahía de la Paz or a scenic trip across the peninsula to Bahía Magdalena to see gray whales and calves up close, depending on the time of year. A flexible sailing schedule explores Isla San Francisco, Bahía Agua Verde, Isla Partida, Isla Espíritu Santo and La Paz. Highlights include snorkeling with sea lions, a mule ride with local rancheros into the arroyo, kayaking, hiking and snorkeling excursions. Rates begin at $2,995 per person, double occupancy.

Hawaiian Islands

In 2017, 22 departures explore four islands —Hawaiʻi, Maui, Lanaʻi and Molokaʻi—on a Hawaiian Seascapes adventure cruise. From January through April and November through December, the 36-guest Safari Explorer sails one-way itineraries between Hawai'i and Molokaʻi (or reverse). Highlights include a full day of exclusive cultural activities on Molokaʻi, snorkeling with Giant Pacific Manta rays, whale watching and searching for marine life in the Humpback National Marine Sanctuary, exploring the shoreline by kayak and snorkeling with sea turtles. Guests can now choose from 10 theme cruise options while sailing on select small ship cruises in Alaska, Costa Rica and Panamá, Mexico’s Sea of Cortés, coastal Washington and the Columbia & Snake Rivers.

Seattle, WA, December 7, 2015—Un-Cruise Adventures, a small ship cruise line based in Seattle, has hired Richard G. Edwards as vice president of sales and marketing. Edwards takes over the role from Tim Jacox who stepped into a new role as president and COO.

"His knowledge of digital marketing, sales strategies and relationships in the travel industry will be invaluable to us as Un-Cruise Adventures continues to expand and grow."

As the vice president of sales and marketing, Edwards is responsible for strengthening relationships with new and valued longtime travel industry partners, managing the line's overall brand integrity and participating in strategic planning with the executive team. He'll lead the marketing staff to increase Un-Cruise Adventures' global brand presence and consumer understanding of the fast-growing adventure cruising segment. Edwards reports to Tim Jacox.

A 15-year travel industry professional, Edwards has worked as vice president at Wildland Adventures, founding executive director of the Trusted Adventures consortium, and as the director of marketing at G (GAP) Adventures among many years of consulting with adventure companies and non-profits. At G Adventures, he was also founding director and senior advisor for Planeterra, the non-profit arm. His most recent work has been as partner at Tartan Destinations, a firm built on providing boutique marketing strategies, communications and trade development for destinations and a variety of travel and tourism organizations.

Edwards has worked and traveled in 40+ countries, using his international experience and proficiency in Spanish to develop Latin American adventure tourism. He's currently a board member of the Adventure Travel Trade Association and has been cited as a Top Travel Specialist for Costa Rica by Condé Nast Traveler magazine each year since 2006.

Rocky Mountaineer and Denali/Knik River tours extend the Un-Cruise experience to shore

Adventurers embarking on a small ship adventure cruise in Alaska or a river cruise on the Columbia & Snake Rivers may now extend their Un-Cruise experience on shore with two new land tours. Beginning in 2016, Un-Cruise Adventures offers a Denali Park & Knik River Adventure tour and a train journey through Canada and the Pacific Northwest aboard the Rocky Mountaineer.

"Our guests say they're interested in extending their trips with us, so we're developing land tours to connect with our cruises," said Captain Dan Blanchard, CEO. A scenic train journey explores the Sea to Sky corridor and the Canadian Rockies. The Rocky Mountaineer extension has two itineraries combinable with either Alaska or Columbia & Snake River cruises.

An 8-night pre- or post-cruise Rocky Mountaineer tour between Seattle and Vancouver, BC (or reverse) can be added to the Columbia & Snake River cruise. Traveling via first-class GoldLeaf rail service, guests view scenic Howe sound, the lush farmland of the Pemberton Valley and the dramatic scenery of the Canadian Rockies with overnight stays in Seattle, Whistler, Quesnel, Kamloops and Vancouver. Two nights are spent at a backcountry  lodge inside Denali National Park with ample time for hiking, fly fishing, mountain biking and guided touring. Two days at Knik River Lodge are spent in comfortable riverside cabins with decks for viewing wildlife, mountains and possibly the Northern Lights.  At Knik, guests may hike the Chugach Mountain trail and explore the historic Independence Mine near the Knik River. Departing Knik, a short morning ride to Anchorage brings guests to the Alaska Native Heritage Center with presentations of dance, elder talk and Native Olympics, time to explore the city and an overnight stay.  Airport transfers, hotel accommodations, rail transportation and select meals are included. The printed brochure has increased to 100 pages and includes details on twenty cruise itineraries plus land tour extensions. Colorful photos and maps illustrate each trip, and ship deck plans provide an overview of the line’s fleet of boutique yachts and small ships carrying 22-88 guests.

A Pure Panama: Cultures, Coasts & Canals itinerary in 2017 sails roundtrip Panama City, Panama aboard the 64-guest Safari Voyager. Highlights include exclusive visits at Guna Yala Islands and Darién villages, explorations of historic Casco Antiguo and San Lorenzo Fort, wildlife viewing in the Darién Jungle by motorized dugout canoe, bird watching along the Chagres River and a full transit of the 48-mile long Panama Canal.

On the Pacific side of Panama, travelers hike into the Punta Patiño Nature Reserve in the Darién Jungle, spot wildlife on the Mogue River by motorized dugout canoe and meet locals at an Emberá village. Guests also explore the Pearl Islands Archipelago, dotted with 90 islands and 130 islets, by kayak, paddle board, skiffs and snorkeling, while keeping eyes peeled for whales and dolphins.

Tim Jacox is new President and COO at Un-Cruise Adventures

Small ship cruise line Un-Cruise Adventuresannounced today that longtime executive Tim Jacox is stepping into a new role at the line as president and chief operations officer. The adventure and river cruise company has a fleet of eight ships and sails in Alaska, Columbia/Snake Rivers, the Pacific Northwest, Mexico, Hawaii, and Central and South America.

Jacox has been with the company for 14 years in executive management and sales and marketing roles. Previously, he was principal and executive vice president. Jacox partnered with Captain Dan Blanchard, principal and CEO of Un-Cruise Adventures in 2009 to reorganize and expand operations. Jacox is a 30-plus year veteran of the travel industry with 20 years spent in operations, sales and marketing, and executive leadership at the former Alaska Sightseeing/Cruise West.

“Tim and I have worked side-by-side for 28 years,” said Captain Dan Blanchard, CEO. “I think the opportunity for him to take the helm is not only timely, but appropriate, given the growth of our company.”

As president and COO, Jacox will oversee operations, marketing and sales, accounting and administration in the Seattle-based office. Executive leaders in the three primary departments will report to him. Stepping into this position rounds out a series of recent and ongoing initiatives as Un-Cruise Adventures expands, including investment in a new reservation system, development of a new website, support personnel, and additional office space. A search is underway for a vice president of sales and marketing.

“I am truly excited to lead such an outstanding, experienced, skilled and unrelenting group of team members at Un-Cruise Adventures,” Jacox remarked. “Small ship cruising has been in my blood since first starting in the industry in 1979, and working with travel agent partners stands as a mainstay of my career.”

Blanchard remains principal and CEO with product development directors reporting to him. He plans to spend time meeting guests in Alaska, planning the company’s growth and developing new destinations and itineraries that fit the line’s specialty of small ship cruises along the West Coast of the Americas. He also looks after the company’s public policy interests and environmental stewardship. Blanchard is based in Juneau, Alaska but maintains an office in Seattle as well.

With eight vessels plus one partner vessel carrying 22-88 guests, the company reports a carrying capacity of 13,350 guests on board its ships for 2015. In 2016, operations begin for the first time in the Galápagos Islands and Costa Rica/Panama.

From November-March, Safari Endeavour sails on weeklong adventures from San José del Cabo, Baja. The Sea of Cortés is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve. The new itinerary launching in January combines active explorations with seasonal sea life encounters. When gray whales arrive to calve in Bahía Magdalena, an overland tour to board panga boats and see whales and calves up close is included (usually January-March). At other times of the year, a snorkeling excursion in Bahía de La Paz may bring guests up close to the largest known fish in the sea—whale sharks.

Exploration cruising allows for a flexible itinerary with time to seek out wildlife.
