Atlas Ocean Voyages to launch expedition sailing yacht in 2028

Atlas Ocean Voyages has outlined plans for a new expedition vessel, Atlas Adventurer, scheduled to enter service in 2028, featuring hybrid propulsion and an all-suite accommodation design.

The ship is being developed as a sailing-assisted expedition yacht, combining conventional engines with a triple-masted sail system to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. It will also incorporate dual-fuel engines, battery-supported hybrid propulsion and ice-class capability for operations in polar regions.

The vessel will accommodate up to 400 passengers with a crew of 274, and is designed to operate in remote destinations, including polar itineraries.

Accommodation will be entirely suite-based, with three categories ranging from standard veranda suites to larger penthouse and two-bedroom owner’s suites.

Atlas Ocean Voyages President and CEO James Rodriguez said the project reflects the company’s focus on combining expedition capability with evolving guest expectations.

“Atlas Adventurer represents a step forward for our brand and for expedition travel,” he said. “We are aiming to balance established design principles with operational and environmental considerations.”

The vessel is being designed by Portuguese studio Oitoemponto, with interiors that draw on traditional ocean liner design, adapted for contemporary use.

Reservations for the ship are expected to open in June 2026, ahead of its planned debut two years later.

Atlas said the vessel forms part of its broader strategy to expand in the expedition cruise segment, where operators are increasingly investing in smaller ships with lower environmental impact.
