Oceanwide Expeditions has set a new world record for the southernmost position reached by a non-icebreaker vessel in the Weddell Sea, achieving the milestone for the second consecutive year.

On 5 February 2026, the expedition vessel m/v Ortelius reached a position of 78°05.60'S in Vahsel Bay, marking the furthest south a ship of its type has ever navigated. The achievement surpasses the company’s previous record of 78°03.471'S, set during the 2024–25 Antarctic season.

The record was reached during Oceanwide Expeditions’ 27-night Remote Weddell Sea Explorer voyage, one of the operator’s most extensive and exploratory itineraries. The voyage is designed to take guests beyond established Antarctic cruising routes, offering access to some of the most remote areas of the Southern Ocean.

Oceanwide Expeditions acknowledged the contribution of the crew of m/v Ortelius, including Captain Remmert Koster, Expedition Leader Chris Long and the expedition team, citing their experience and leadership in accomplishing the record-setting voyage.
