Study shows interest in small-ship cruising is booming

Analysis of Australian online search behaviour indicates growing interest in small-ship cruising, suggesting increasing consumer demand for more intimate cruise experiences.

The research examined four years of Australian search data from 2022 to 2025, reviewing aggregated search volumes across multiple small-ship, river and expedition cruise operators, along with broader category search terms.

Search demand for 19 small-ship and luxury cruise brands — each operating vessels carrying fewer than 250 passengers — increased by 64% over the past two years, with consistent year-on-year growth recorded across operators. Brand searches in 2025 were 22% higher than in 2024.

Generic category searches have also risen significantly. Terms including “small ship cruises”, “luxury small ship cruises”, “expedition cruising” and “yacht cruises” collectively increased by 56% over two years. Searches for “small ship cruises” have doubled since 2022, while searches for “expedition cruising” have increased fourfold over four years.

Graham Carter, co-founder of small-ship operator Unforgettable Croatia, said: “Small-ship cruising has moved firmly into the mainstream for Australian travellers, and we’re seeing that reflected directly in both enquiry levels and booking patterns. Guests are increasingly drawn to more intimate ships, destination-focused itineraries and experiences that feel more immersive and personal”.

Industry commentators attribute the trend to growing consumer preference for smaller vessels, destination-focused itineraries, and more immersive travel experiences. Smaller ships can also access ports and locations unavailable to larger vessels, broadening itinerary options in some regions.

Search analysts note that rising brand-specific searches typically indicate stronger consumer awareness and purchasing intent, alongside broader growth in category-level interest.

Separately, one small-ship operator has scheduled 145 cruise departures for the 2026 season between May and October, operating a fleet of eight vessels with a maximum of 19 cabins each. Programmes include seven-night itineraries, onboard dining, guided excursions, daily swim stops and shore time in local ports, with additional private yacht charters and land itineraries also offered.
