Brand new Australian Star (finally) launching February 2026

#expeditioncruising .

Murray River Paddlesteamers will launch a new luxury vessel, Australian Star, next month, marking the arrival of what is being billed as Australia’s first five-star paddlesteamer and a significant new entrant in domestic river cruising.

The $11 million vessel will operate on the Murray River and carry a maximum of 38 guests. APT Luxury Travel has chartered close to half of the ship’s departures across 2026 and 2027 and has released a limited booking incentive for early reservations. Under the offer, bookings made by January 31, 2026, include a saving of $300 per person, or $600 per couple.

Built to reflect the appearance of a 19th-century paddlesteamer while incorporating modern amenities, Australian Star is the largest paddlesteamer operating in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also described as the only wood-fired paddlesteamer in the world offering five-star accommodation.

The vessel features 19 staterooms, each with a private ensuite, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, luxury linen and direct deck access. Onboard facilities include a main lounge with river views, a restaurant, and several outdoor areas designed for relaxation. Propulsion is provided by a hybrid diesel and steam system, centred on a restored 1907 wood-fired steam engine, intended to combine historical authenticity with improved energy efficiency.

Cruises aboard Australian Star will operate year-round from Echuca, a historic river port in Victoria, with itineraries of up to seven nights. Daily shore excursions will visit regional farm properties, wineries and heritage towns, alongside onboard and riverside dining experiences.

APT Luxury Travel has introduced a seven-night round-trip cruise package from Melbourne for 2026 and 2027 sailings. Prices start from $8,095 per person, twin share, for bookings made before the January 31, 2026 deadline. The package includes return coach transfers between Melbourne and Echuca, all onboard meals and beverages, and a range of guided experiences.

Included activities feature an onboard tasting of regional wines, a guided visit to Murray Gums Estate vineyard hosted by the property owner, a night-time lantern tour of Echuca, and a riverside barbecue. An APT Cruise Director will accompany guests throughout the journey.

The launch of Australian Star comes as river cruise operators seek to broaden the appeal of the Murray River, positioning it as a destination for small-scale, premium travel focused on regional culture, food and landscapes.
