Ponant to deploy two vessels in French Polynesia

#expeditioncruising .

Ponant Explorations Group will expand its operations in French Polynesia from the 2026–2027 northern winter season by deploying two vessels in the region, broadening its range of itineraries and destinations.

Building on more than 27 years of experience in the region with Paul Gauguin, Ponant Explorations Group will introduce Le Jacques Cartier to operate alongside the long-established vessel. The two-ship strategy is designed to cater to different market segments, with each vessel offering a distinct style of cruising.

Paul Gauguin, purpose-built for shallow lagoons and based year-round in French Polynesia, will continue as the destination’s resident ship. During the 2026–2027 season, the vessel will offer 66 departures across its 165 staterooms and suites, primarily serving the Society Islands, Tuamotu and Marquesas, with selected itineraries extending to the Cook Islands, Fiji and Tonga.

Le Jacques Cartier will focus on expedition-style cruising to more remote and less-visited archipelagos. The ship will operate nine departures, offering 92 staterooms and suites, and will sail itineraries covering the Tuamotu, Marquesas, Austral, Gambier and Pitcairn Islands. Three new “Discovery” itineraries will be introduced, which can be combined into a 42-night voyage visiting six archipelagos and 23 islands.

The new itineraries follow advance reconnaissance carried out by expedition experience director José Sarica in the Austral and Tuamotu Islands, with an emphasis on developing shore programs in collaboration with local communities. The work resulted in the addition of six new ports across the two archipelagos, incorporating cultural activities such as welcome ceremonies, artisan workshops and visits to marae sacred sites.

Operationally, the two vessels will offer different onboard and shore experiences. Paul Gauguin will continue its established cultural programming, including Tahitian hosts and optional excursions at each port, supported by a PADI-certified diving team. Le Jacques Cartier will include one guided activity per guest per day, led by local experts, with landings conducted using tenders, local boats and zodiacs.
