National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has launched its first European river cruise program aboard the chartered Transcend Connect, with itineraries in Holland, Belgium and the Rhine.
National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions has entered the European river cruise market, launching its first sailing on August 15 with a new Holland and Belgium itinerary.
The inaugural program, Holland and Belgium: Medieval History & Scenic Waterways, includes a seven-night cruise between Amsterdam and Brussels. The itinerary features calls at Kampen, with a land tour to Giethoorn; Arnhem; Rotterdam; The Hague, including a canal cruise to Delft; Kinderdijk; Antwerp; and Ghent.
The program is being operated aboard Transcend Connect, a luxury riverboat chartered from Transcend Cruises.
The 2025-built vessel carries up to 120 passengers and features panoramic windows, contemporary accommodation and technology designed for European river operations. It is expected to operate on waterways in the Netherlands, Germany, France and other European destinations.
National Geographic-Lindblad said the river program will follow the company’s expedition model, with an Expedition Leader, field staff and, during the inaugural season, at least one National Geographic Expedition Expert. The onboard team will support guided visits, private tours, tastings, and destination-focused programming centred on local history and culture.
Lindblad CEO Trey Byus said the first sailing marked the start of the company’s expansion into European waterways. He said the program would allow the operator to apply its expedition approach to continental European destinations.
A second itinerary, Rhine River: Castles, Culture and Culinary Delights, will launch in September aboard Transcend Connect. The seven-night program will operate between Cologne and Basel, following the Rhine Gorge and visiting Mainz, Frankfurt and Heidelberg in Germany, along with Strasbourg and Colmar in France’s Alsace region.
The company’s river expansion is scheduled to continue in 2027 with the addition of Transcend Evolve. The second vessel will operate Christmas market cruises, doubling National Geographic-Lindblad’s European river fleet and extending the program into the winter season.
The move places National Geographic-Lindblad in the competitive European river cruise market while differentiating its product through expedition-style interpretation, expert-led programming, and smaller-group experiences.
