Orient Express Corinthian christened ahead of Mediterranean debut

The Orient Express Corinthian, described as the world’s largest sailing cruise ship, was christened on April 29 and delivered to its owners, Orient Express Sailing Yachts, marking the brand’s entry into maritime travel.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, the vessel is the result of a decade of development and features a hybrid propulsion system combining wind power and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The 220-metre ship is equipped with three automated sail rigs, each measuring about 1,500 square metres and rising more than 100 metres. The system, known as SolidSail, is designed to maximise wind propulsion, with rotating masts enabling optimal positioning relative to wind conditions.

During sea trials in February, the vessel reached 12 knots under wind power alone, a first for a vessel of its size, the shipyard said.

The ship also incorporates energy-efficiency systems, including AI-assisted monitoring to detect marine life and reduce collision risk, as well as dynamic positioning technology to limit seabed impact.

Sébastien Bazin, chief executive of Accor, said the project extends the Orient Express brand beyond rail and hotels.

“Extending Orient Express to the sea is a natural evolution for the brand,” he said.

The vessel will enter commercial service in May, operating in the Mediterranean before repositioning to the Caribbean for the winter season.

It accommodates 110 passengers in 54 suites and includes multiple dining venues, a theatre, spa and marina facilities.

A sister ship, Orient Express Olympian, is scheduled for delivery in 2027.

The launch reflects a broader trend of luxury hotel brands, including Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons, expanding into the cruise sector.
