River cruise operator AmaWaterways has christened its second vessel on Colombia’s Magdalena River, AmaMelodia, marking a further expansion of its operations in the region.
The ceremony in Barranquilla was attended by representatives from ProColombia, government officials and local community leaders. A traditional blessing was performed by a local Mamo, reflecting the river's cultural significance.
AmaMelodia follows the launch of its sister ship AmaMagdalena and accommodates up to 64 passengers. The vessel was designed in collaboration with Colombian architect Camilo Restrepo.
Kristin Karst, co-founder and chief brand ambassador of AmaWaterways, said the expansion reflects the company’s long-term engagement in the destination.
“This milestone means a great deal as we expand our presence in Colombia and continue to strengthen relationships in the region,” she said, adding the company aims to deliver guest experiences while supporting local communities.
The vessel will operate itineraries along the Magdalena River, providing access to destinations including Mompox and San Basilio de Palenque, as well as guided excursions focused on wildlife and local culture.
Chief executive Catherine Powell said Colombia forms part of the company’s broader expansion beyond its traditional European markets.
“With AmaMelodia, we are extending our presence in new regions while continuing to deliver the experiences our guests expect,” she said.
The vessel’s godmother, Elisabeth Mercado Herrera, is the first woman to captain a river cruise ship on the Magdalena River.
“As a Colombian, this is a significant moment,” she said. “River cruising here creates new opportunities for communities along the river.”
AmaWaterways said it will continue to develop itineraries in Colombia as part of its long-term strategy in the region.
