Vessel: SH Minerva
Location: Solomon Islands
Itinerary: Wild Eden of Papua New Guinea
Well, we are in the tropics after all, and the Coral Sea seems unusually active with storms right now.
Queensland has just had a visit from Narelle and now Category five Cyclone Maila is deciding whether to come knocking. Currently, she is circulating in the Solomon Sea to the south of the Solomon Islands as SH Minerva navigates through what was once known as 'The Slot', the passage used by the fast Japanese destroyers to resupply Guadalcanal during 1942 and later evacuate the 10,000 survivors back to Rabaul after the failure of that campaign in early 1943.
We had planned to visit Njari Island, a small uninhabited atoll near Gizo, but with rising seas and gusting winds making landing unsafe, it was decided to sail on toward Bougainville. Out of the protection of The Slot, we endured a bit of a bumpy night.
