Seabourn cancels submarine program

Seabourn has confirmed it will discontinue its expedition submarine program, with the decision announced on 20 February 2026 in a communication to travel advisors and industry partners.

The luxury line said the submarines—previously a signature feature aboard its expedition vessels Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit—will be withdrawn at the end of the current Antarctic season, with operations ceasing in early March.

In its statement, Seabourn Cruise Line cited a combination of commercial and operational factors behind the move. Chief among them was lower-than-expected demand for the optional, high-cost submersible excursions, which were offered as add-on experiences rather than included in voyage fares.

The company also pointed to the technical complexity of maintaining and certifying the submarines, along with tightening regulatory frameworks governing their use in sensitive environments such as Antarctica. These constraints have increased operating costs and limited deployment flexibility.

Seabourn said it would instead “focus on and elevate other aspects” of its expedition offering, including Zodiac landings, expert-led excursions and onboard enrichment.

The withdrawal marks a rare retrenchment in the expedition sector, where lines have increasingly invested in high-end experiential equipment to differentiate their products.
