From On Board: Day 7: SH Minerva in Melanesia; Tabs on Tab

#expeditioncruising .

Vessel: SH Minerva
Location: Tab Island PNG
Itinerary: Wild Eden of Papua New Guinea

The smouldering embers of Cyclone Maila continued to throw up enough wind and uncomfortable swell to make our intended landing at Crown Island unsafe, so Expedition Leader Nicki DeSouza and Captain Sven made the decision to push on to a more favourable location, so our intended landing at tiny, remote Tab Island was brought forward a couple of days.

The bush telegraph swung into action, and the islanders quickly made our landing zone ready. Our flotilla of Zodiacs brought us ashore for a relaxing swim, snorkel and paddle off the beach of the thickly-jungled atoll.

ABOUT TAB ISLAND

Tab Island, also known as Pig Island or Gosem Island, is a small island located off the north coast of Madang, Papua New Guinea. It is known for its natural beauty. The island is part of the Sinub, Tab, Tabad, and Laugum Wildlife Management Areas, which are important for their ecological significance and for protecting their unique ecosystems.

Madang Lagoon is considered one of the most biologically diverse marine sites in the Asia Pacific. It has around 700 species of coral and over 1000 species of reef fishes, as many as the Great Barrier Reef in a fraction of the area. It is the largest and most diverse lagoon on the north coast of PNG.
